Ear pain is very common, especially in children. It is mainly caused due to an ear infection, irritation or allergies, changes in air pressure, such as when you take off or land in a plane, an object in the ear, and even with dental problems.
The major step in diagnosing an ear infection is to find the place of infection. An ear infection may take place in the outer ear, the middle ear, or sometimes both. The outer ear infection is known as otitis externa involving the ear canal and external ear and the infection in the middle ear is known as otitis media.
An ear infection can be cured by using an otoscope, a small lighted device used to view the ear canal and eardrum. Though it is not a simple practice with general ENT doctors, an otologist will use a specialized microscope to check the ear with more comfort and in more detail.
